その雲の下で、鳥が飛んでいた。
犬は上を見て、動かなくなった。
犬は飛びたいと思った。でも足は土の上にある。
その時、小さい鳥が一つ、木の下に来た。
小さい鳥は歩いていた。飛ばなかった。
犬と鳥は同じ道を歩いた。
犬は分かった。空を飛ばなくても、同じ所に行ける。
二つの動物は、同じ風を感じていた。

子供は「きれい」と言った。今は「なぜ」を言わなかった。
父はその事を感じて、笑った。

外に出て、食べ物を買いに行った。

男の人は言った。「はい、あります。この魚は遠い海から来ました。とても良い魚です。」

私は魚と卵を選んだ。
「全部でいくらですか。」
「三百円です。」
少し高いと思った。でも遠い所の魚だから。
お金を与えて、家に来た。
魚と卵で食べ物を作った。
腹に食べ物が入って、体が温かくなった。
たぶん後の日も、あの魚を買いに行く。

私は笑って、読んであげる。
この本は物だけじゃない。母の心だ。
たぶん後で、私の子供も、この本を子供にあげる。

その木はとても長い時を生きていた。
木は多くの雨を知っていた。多くの風を感じていた。
子供たちが来て、木の上で楽しんだ。その子供たちは大きくなって、出て行った。
戦いがあった。人たちは木の近くで泣いた。
木は動かなかった。立っているだけだった。
動物たちが木の中に入って、寝た。
草が毎年木の近くに出てきた。そして終わった。
でも木はまだある。
ある日の夜、一りの女が来た。
女は木に手を持って、何も言わなかった。
木も何も言わなかった。でも二つの心は一つになった。

Those children grew large and went away. There was fighting. People cried near the tree. The tree did not move. It only stood. Animals entered the tree and slept. Flowers came up near the tree every year. And then ended. But the tree is still here. One evening a woman came. She placed her hand against the tree and said nothing. The tree also said nothing. But their two hearts became one.
頭が痛い日 (The Day My Head Hurt)

今日、頭がとても痛かった。
体も重かった。
母が「大丈夫？」と聞いた。
「大丈夫じゃない。頭が痛い。」
母と、体を助ける所に行った。
体を助ける人が聞いた。「どこが痛いですか。」
「ここです。頭です。寝る事ができないんです。」
「分かりました。大丈夫ですよ。この体を良くする物を飲んでください。」
体を良くする物をもらった。
家で水と飲んで、寝た。
後の日、頭は痛くなかった。
体が良くなったら、心も明るくなった。
「痛い」と言える事は、とても必要な事だ。

男の人は私の髪を手で持って、見た。
「髪がとても強いですね。」と男の人は話した。
「本当ですか。」
「はい。たぶん骨も強いです。」
私は笑った。「分かりません。でも歯は強いです。」
男の人も笑った。
「頭の皮は良いですか。」
「いいえ、少し赤いです。太陽の光が強かったから。」
男の人はとても良く切った。
終わった後、私の髪は新しくなった。
髪を切る人と話すのは楽しかった。

海が悪い日は、家にいる。

その音を聞いて、寝る。
海の近くの家は、私の一番好きな所だ。

海の国の人は水を知っていた。山の国の人は土と木を知っていた。
ある日、一りの男が山から出て、海まで行った。
海で女が水の近くに座っていた。
男は海を見た。怖かった。
女は男の目を見て、笑った。
「怖くないよ」と女は言った。「入ってみて。」
男は少し入った。水はとても寒かった。
二りの言葉は違った。でも笑いは同じだった。
夜、二りは火の近くに座って、食べ物を食べた。
月が空に出ていた。二つの国から見ても、一つの月だ。

That night they sat near a fire and ate together. The moon was out in the sky - one moon, seen from two countries.
お金がなかった時 (When There Was No Money)

前の年、私にはお金がなかった。
する事がなくなったからだ。
家には一万円だけあった。
毎日、考えた。「何を買う？何を買わない？」
食べ物は必要だ。千円で、五日の食べ物を買った。
新しい服は必要じゃない。買わなかった。
お金が少しになったら、怖くなった。
でも、家が近い人が助けてくれた。
「食べ物をあげる。もらってください」と言ってくれた。
私は泣いた。
「ありがとう。お金ができたら、私も人を助ける」と言った。
毎日、新しいする事を探した。
三つの月の後、新しいする事ができた。
今、お金はもう少しある。
お金がなかった時は悪かった。
でも、必要な物と必要じゃない物が分かった。
人の心が良い事も分かった。

私は小さい言葉で「こんにちは」と言った。
その人は毎日、新しい言葉を教えてくれた。
「水」。「道」。「ありがとう」。
一つの言葉は小さい。
でも言葉が多くなったら、私の中の怖い事は小さくなった。
今、私は買う所で話せる。「これはいくらですか」と聞ける。
体が痛い時、「ここが痛い」と言える。
言葉は道だ。人から人への道だ。
あの人は私に言葉をくれた。
言葉と、新しい生き方を。
今、私も、新しく来た人に言葉を教えてあげる。

寒い国の小さい所に、人が生きていた。
とても寒い時が来た。
風は強く、夜は長かった。
一つの家に、小さい火があった。
他の家の火は、もう死んでいた。
火がある家の女の人は考えた。
「この火を私だけで持つ事もできる。でも、それは良い事？」
女の人は外に出た。
火を少し、近くの家にあげた。
その家の人も、火を他の家にあげた。
火から火へ。家から家へ。
夜の終わりに、全部の家に火があった。
小さい所の全部が温かくなった。
火は、あげても小さくならない。
これは火だけの話じゃない。
良い事も、言葉も、心も同じだ。
あげたら、もっと大きくなる。
In a small place in a cold country, people lived. A very cold time came. The wind was strong and the nights were long. In one house, there was a small fire. The fires of the other houses had already died. The woman of the house with the fire thought: "I could keep this fire only for myself. But is that a good thing?" The woman went outside. She gave a little of the fire to the nearest house. The people of that house gave fire to another house. From fire to fire. From house to house. By the end of the night, every house had a fire. The whole small place became warm. Fire does not grow smaller when you give it. This is not a story about fire only. Good things, words, and hearts are the same. When you give them, they grow bigger.
